Overview

ChordWizard has advanced capabilities for Printing Reports of several types.

With a highly sophisticated reporting engine, ChordWizard gives you instant access to a great deal of valuable printed content for very little effort.

At the same time, you have a fine level of control over every aspect of report presentation.

A key feature of the reporting engine is its tight integration with the context of the ChordWizard workspace through the filter.

So, for example, if you are viewing chordshapes for Am7 in Library View, two mouse clicks will give you a Chord Book report containing those exact same chordshapes.

However it is also straightforward to disconnect your report from the filter and make your own custom selection for the content you want to appear in it.  For more details see Selection Options.

There are three types of reports in ChordWizard - Chord Book reports, Relations reports and Scale Chart reports.

Chord Book Reports

Chord Book reports are based on the chordshapes in the current library.  You can print an entire library as a complete press-ready chord book, or just the section of it that relates to your current activity.

You can also create new custom-purpose libraries specifically for printing.

For example, you could create a new library to hold only the chordshapes in a particular song, allowing you to print the chordshape diagrams on a separate page to include with the sheet music.

When you choose Print Reports or Preview Reports from Library View or Design View, ChordWizard selects the Chord Book report type by default.

Relations Reports

Relations reports provide a hard copy of chord and scale relations information in a format similar to that available from Relations View.

They can be used to indicate either the related scales of a chord, or the related chords of a scale.

You can print the relations of a single chord or scale, which is handy for songwriting away from the computer.

Or you can print an organised reference book containing the relations of every chord or scale.

When you choose Print Reports or Preview Reports from Relations View, ChordWizard selects the Relations report type by default.

Scale Chart Reports

Scale Chart reports contain diagrams showing how scales appear on the fretboard of your instrument.

They offer full color-coded labels, with a different color being used for each note or degree of the scale.

Scale Charts can display scale note locations in three ways.  They can be shown over the entire fretboard.  Or they can appear in full or partial positions, as they are shown in Scales View.

When you choose Print Reports or Preview Reports from Scales View, ChordWizard selects the Scale Chart report type by default.

Report Options

Each of the three report types contains a wide range of structural, layout and formatting options, which are accessible from the Report Options property sheet.

There are several mechanisms and options that are common to all report types, putting the same familiar and powerful tools at your fingertips no matter what sort of report you are designing.  These include:

- Banners and automatically generated tables of contents

- Custom or automatic selection of content

- Grouping of content by chords or scales

- Page layout, footers and binding options

- Font, size, color and alignment of individual elements

There are some differences in the Reports Options property sheet between report types.

Primarily, these consist of a Diagrams page for Chord Book and Scale Chart reports compared to a Matrix page for Relations reports, and some special options on the Groups page that apply only to Scale Chart reports.

Each report type maintains its own set of report options.  So, for example, you could update the current margin settings for Chord Book reports, and the margins of the other report types would be unaffected.

Report Preview

You can change report options at any time, but probably the best way is from Report Preview mode, where you can see the results of your change immediately in the screen preview.

Report Preview mode presents the report on virtual pages on the screen, showing you exactly how your report will look when printed onto paper.

It provides the usual operations that you would expect from a Print Preview function, such as moving between pages, and zooming the screen pages for a closeup or page view.

Report Templates

The wide range of Report Options that ChordWizard provides can be easily managed with the use of Report Templates.

These allow you to store the entire collection of settings for a report type in a report template file with a cwr extension.

Templates allow you to develop standardized report formats for custom uses, such as preparing lessons, and to switch rapidly between different templates to get very different presentations from the same content.

The only part of the report options not stored in a template is the Selection, since the purpose of a template is define a report format to apply to any number of different selections.

Each report type has its own current template, and can be switched between templates without disturbing the report options or template attachments status of the other report types.
