Notes To Scales |
The Notes To Scales tool is a popup window which is opened by:
Tool Bar: ![]()
Menu: Tools-Notes To Scales
It analyzes the set of notes you enter, and displays the scales which contain these notes.
This is useful for identifying the scale(s) that a melody is based on, by entering the notes found in the melody. You can also use Scales and Fretboard mode of Relations Viewto achieve this, using fretboard locations rather than notes.
The Notes and Scales tools is also helpful for exploring relationships between scales and the notes which they are made from.
The Notes list and Scales list are colored yellow and red respectively as with other areas in the ChordWizard workspace. You can change these colors with the Display Options.
Controls

You may select any or all of the notes in this list. There are specific keystrokes for navigating the Notes list.
The count of selected notes is shown at the top, and the names of the selected notes are shown underneath the list.

Scales
Each time you change the selection in the Notes list, the Scales list is updated to show which scales contain the new set of notes.
Each scale in the list is ranked with a percentage to indicate what proportion of its notes you have entered.
For example, entering the notes C and E results in the C Major Pentatonic scale having a ranking of 40% (because C and E are two out of its five notes) while the C Major scale is ranked at 29% (because C and E are two out its seven notes).
As you enter more notes, the list of possible scales will be narrowed down and the choice becomes clearer.
The count of scale in the Scales list is shown at the top.
Set Filter to Scale
Sends the selected scale to the filter. When you return to the workspace, Relations View can help you find suitable chords for songwriting, or Scales View can show you positions for playing the scale.
