Controls

Play

Starts the metronome with the options you have specified.  When you first open the Metronome window, this button has the focus, so you can start and stop the metronome with the Space bar.

While the metronome is playing, most options are disabled, but you can still make changes to the tempo at any time.

Stop

Stops the metronome.

Beat Grid

This area at the top of the Metronome window gives you the visual display of the metronome beats while it is playing.

It is divided into several squares, one for each beat in the Period you have selected.  The beats are numbered starting from 1.

When the metronome is playing, the current beat is highlighted with a background color.  You can change this color with the Display Options.

Tempo

Specifies the tempo, or speed of the metronome.  It is measured in Beats per Minute (bpm).

To adjust the tempo, you can either move the horizontal slider control, or type the new tempo into the box provided.  Each of these will update the other.

The tempo can vary from 30 bpm to 240 bpm.

Period

This dropdown list specifies how many beats you want in each bar.  The Beat Grid display will change depending on what you select.  There are four options, which suit most common music time signatures, as listed below:

2 Beats - for 2/4 time

3 Beats - for 3/4, 6/8, 9/8 or 12/8 time

4 Beats - for 4/4 or common time

5 Beats - for 5/4 time

Play Beats

This dropdown list specifies whether to play each beat in the bar.  Usually you will select All Beats, however some practice techniques require sounds playing on only the Odd Beats or Even Beats of the bar.

Regardless which option is selected, the Beat Grid will still visually indicate all beats of the bar to help keep you in time.

Silent

This option turns the sound off, making you rely only on the visual display of the Beat Grid to keep in time.

Accent First

This option accents the first beat of each bar by playing it with a different sound.  This helps you keep you synchronized with the bar structure of the music you are playing.

If you have chosen to play only on Even Beats, the second beat will be accented instead.

This option is disabled for a Silent metronome.

Close

Closes the metronome and returns to the workspace.
